About to get our Piggy on!
Princesses of Pork!
OK, that's probably not my best title ever (how about Kings of Cochon or Brigadiers of Bacon?) but it was that time of year again, and my co-partner in piggy crime, Sarah and I were about to immerse ourselves in the lard-crazy fest that is Cochon 555!

So, in my books, the definition of a tradition is having done the same thing more than once, and last year Sarah & I had had an absolute blast at the same event, held at the Fairmont Hotel.  We'd indulged ourselves and bought the VIP package, which meant that we'd gain access to the main tasting room a full hour ahead of the hoi-polloi.  OMG.  It was amazing.  The food was absolutely divine, including offerings from 5 of the Bay area's finest chefs & restaurants, including Traci des Jardins from Jardineire, as well as Sons and Daughters.  The other AWESOME thing about the event was the hilarious photobooth that they had stationed outside the main event hall.  Because Sarah & I had turned up quite a way ahead of the doors opening (we take our piggy very seriously and didnt want to miss a single moment) we had plenty of time to goof about with all the props and nonsense!  Here are some of the pics from last year - and we were completely sober when these were taken!!

This year, our plan of attack was exactly the same, as per our freshly-minted tradition.  We'd (again) indulged in buying the VIP tickets as it had got pretty packed once general admission started last year.   Just to give you a better sense of what we were expecting, here's the description from the Cochon 555 website:
COCHON 555 – five chefs, five pigs, five winemakers, five years! Do not miss it when this one-of-a-kind traveling culinary competition and tasting event comes home and marks a culinary milestone with its 5th Anniversary Tour. Created to promote a national conversation around the sustainable farming of heritage-breed pigs, each event challenges five local chefs to prepare a menu from the entirety of one 200 pound family-raised heritage breed of pig, nose-to-tail. Twenty judges (culinary luminaries) and 400 guests help decide the winning chef by voting on the "best bite of the day". The winner will be crowned the Prince of Porc and will compete at Grand Cochon event at the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen on Sunday, June 16.
New additions to the events in 2013 include the launch of an exciting cocktail competition called "Punch Kings" featuring Breckenridge Bourbon, prepared by [6] local bartenders (still room to signup on the link above), plus the new TarTare Bar round out the exclusive VIP hour. All attendees enjoy butcher demonstrations, sustainable oysters, creative pork dishes from all the chefs, a visit to the Manhattan Bar or new Chupito Bar featuring Mezcals, plus the infamous Cheese Bar saw bold enhancements, ice-cold brew from Anchor Brewing, pork-spiked desserts and cold-brewed coffee will close out the evening.
The COCHON 555 event is 100% inclusive and always on Sunday.
Sounded GREAT, right?

Ah.... the pressures of expectation.  Sarah & I had been sooo looking forward to this event that maybe it was never going to live up to the original experience, but I have to say that we were both profoundly disappointed this year.  Instead of it being a celebratory symphony of everything pig, it was a discordant mishmash of sloppy, lazy cooking with very little of the creativity that had been in abundance the year before.  The finesse of flavors and diversity of offerings we'd so enjoyed last year (hay consommé, anyone?) was just absent.  The offering that came closest was the plate of food from the Four Seasons chef - and the pork and beans was simply divine.  Unfortunately, that was about the best bite of the night.

There was no photobooth either.  In keeping with our Tradition, Sarah had worn the same dress as last year (I'd worn the most similar looking outfit that I can fit into at the moment!) and we'd been really looking forward to recreating the photo craziness that we'd had a blast with, the year before.  Alas, it was not to be.  Instead, there were a few vendors looking to sell you t-shirts or free flight raffles (or phone numbers, Ms. Little), and there was an artist with little watercolors that were included in the ticket price (although - unless you were a judge - you couldnt pick one with a pig in it - go figure).  But nothing FUN like last year.  We were gutted.

The other thing that seemed different this year was the proliferation of whiskey vendors (I can't stand whiskey, irrespective of how you spell it) vs vineyards.  I know the blurb says 5 winemakers, but i'm sure there were more of them last year.   What about a nice gin and tonic vendor instead, please?  Hmm??
Pork crackling - yummy but obviously very greasy
The other thing that i don't recall from last year was the obnoxiously loud music that was thumping out across the whole room.  I think there must have been some background music last year, but it certainly wasn't as intrusive as the painfully loud dance beats that made it almost impossible to have a conversation.  I felt that alone cheapened the whole atmosphere from being one of whose soundtrack had been of 400 people's excited porky babbling to that of some trashy nightclub.

At one point, the music got cranked up so loud, the poor folk working the whisky station complained that they wouldn't continue unless it got turned down, as the speakers were right behind their tables.  We went and found the Young Person With a Clipboard who ostensibly appeared to be vaguely in charge of the event logistics and shouted over the volume to turn it the hell down and, eventually, 20mins or so later, the music was reset at a slightly less offensive volume, but- by that stage - the damage had been done and Sarah and I were both pretty much done with the whole thing.   We'd eaten all the food we'd wanted to eat, tasted all the wine there was to taste, availed ourselves of the fake tattoos from the Elk Vineyards and collected our free goodie bags with not much of much interest in them.  So, less than 2 hours after we arrived, we decided we'd had enough and instead, decided to finish off our Sunday afternoon/evening out in true style.

Champagne at The St. Regis it was, then.  Cochon 555 - you'd better step it up for next year, otherwise these two VIPs will go git their bacon on elsewhere..... you have been warned......

Roller-skating mice
Yep, its that time of year again -
let's go Giants!

Yep.  Just another regular weekend, livin' the dream out here in SF!!  As per usual, i'd just got back in to SF on late Friday night, after another few days back in NYC for meetings.  At least the weather is just starting to warm up a bit back East, so its not quite as much of a shock to the system.

I'd gotten up very early on Saturday morning (6.30am ugh!) to drive over to SFO for an 8.15am appointment for an interview with the Customs and Border Patrol folk.  I'd been waiting about 4 months for this appointment (I had to keep changing it because, ironically, of all my travel) and i was under the impression, before i went in, that this was the interview you needed to allow you to use the TSA Pre pre-approval traveler line at the airport.  If you've not seen these at airports yet, they are popping up all over the place and its basically a way for TSA to get those folk deemed "low-security risk" through an expedited security screening.  So, no need to take off your shoes, your laptop out of the bag, nothing.  You just dump your stuff on the conveyer belt, walk through the scanner machine and you are done.   For someone who travels as much as me, the TSA Pre line represents the ultimate in travel nirvana, as you breeze past everyone else, in a separate queue, and go to the head of the line for the TSA person to check your passport.

Anyway, this interview was not for that.  Not at all.  No, what THIS interview was for was to become a member of the GLOBAL ENTRY program and a trusted traveler for international travel!  Not domestic US travel at all!!  It culminated on the Customs and Border Patrol guy sticking a little sticker on the back of my green card, saying CBP (presumably short for Cute British Person), but they dont have anything to do with TSA Pre!  Arrggghhh!!  Gutted!!  I know i'll be grateful for it, my next flight out to Cyprus, but i was profoundly disappointed it wasnt going to allow me into the gates of Travel heaven quite.  (or so I thought..... )

To cheer myself up, I came back via Home Depot and spent a happy few minutes pottering about in the gardening bit, before choosing a couple of tomato plants and some strawberries, so i can try and grow my own this year!!  As its finally starting to warm up, my little patio oasis is bursting into life, so i can't wait to see if I can actually get some fruit going!
My very own tomato plants!
How terribly grown-up of me!

OK, Sarah, that all sounds fine and dandy and I'm very happy for your sudden interest in horticulture, but what on earth does this have to do with Roller Skating mice?    What are you talking about, you crazy Brit?

Good question.

Eddie.  Over to you for a quick explanation....

So, this is where my best laid plans for my Saturday started to go slightly awry.   I'd bought a couple of tickets on Goldstar to go and watch some lovely ladies engage in a little light roller skating action on Saturday night  http://www.arsdbombers.com.   Lori had come over from Walnut Creek to join me and, as it wasnt due to start til 8pm, we figured we'd drive over around 7.15pm, in plenty of time to collect our tickets from Will Call and watch the show.

Now, in the instructions with the ticket, it said to come along early as lines tend to get long.  Long?  How about completely utterly insanely crush-festy long?  We rocked on up at about 7.40pm and there were literally hundreds of people on line and milling about outside Kezar Pavilion (which i think is not much more than a glorified school gym!).  Well, OK - we're both patient and could deal with that - unfortunately, what the instructions failed to mention was the complete and utter lack of ANY parking whatsoever!!  We drove around for a good half hour trying to find somewhere within a 2 mile radius to park - and there was nothing!  Nada!  Zip.  So, in the end, we just gave up on the whole idea and went and got some Thai food instead.  Craziness.  So, i'm not sure if it was really my best laid plan, but I certainly didnt think it was that bad!  Ah well, live and learn!

Anyway, here's a taste of what we missed.   Although it pretty much looks like a bitch slap on wheels, apparently, there are rules.  Who knew?

Spring has Sprung!!

BOIINNGGG!!  Finally, some decent sunny days in SF and my little patio garden outside is going all gun's a-blazin'!!  Working from home today so what better than a few home-grown, fragrant flowers to keep me company as I engage in some light strategery?

And stay tuned for what promises to be a classic Blog-fest weekend - Roller Derby on Saturday (no, I'm not participating!) followed by a symphony of Cochon-craziness on Sunday.  Its going to be epic.

Shivering me timbers!!  Chillin' and cruising, SF-style...
Its the weekend, its Sunday morning and time for another little adventure!

Today's fun was a 2hr champagne cruise round the bay, courtesy of my dear friends at Groupon.  I'd got back from NYC late Friday, then yesterday was spent enjoying a delightfully slothful morning on the couch, catching up with my dear friends Tim and Heidi, then helping my wee chutney mate Alison at the Whiskies of the World event in the evening (fortunately, I can't abide whiskey, so there was no chance of me waking up with anything less than a clear head this morning!).

Yes, it was THAT cold.
Looking out the window as I was getting ready to leave, I was certainly grateful it wasn't as drizzly and yukky as the previous morning, but it certainly wasn't what you classify as...umm.. warm.  Or even sunny.  But, fortunately this time, no potential 5K races were involved,  so I resisted the siren call of my bed and was ready and bundled up, Michelin-man style, when Lori came to pick me up at 9am, ahead of our 10am sail time.

We trundled off to Fisherman's Wharf, to rub shoulders with the tourists and protest loudly at the exorbitance of the parking fees, while secretly loving the sheer naffness and tackiness of the whole place.  There's just an exuberance about it - a shamelessness about how utterly unsophisticated it is, and how its there to just show you a good time, while extracting the maximum money from your wallet, that's as beguiling as it is bothersome.  You end up just giving in and being utterly complicit, surrendering any artifice of erudition, as its just impossible to do anything other than tap into your inner 6yr-old and go with the flow.

So, go with the flow we did - we found our berth where our magnificent(ish) yacht was parked up, met some cool Brits (it was early on a Sunday morning, freezing cold so of COURSE you'd find a bunch of Brits there wanting to get their cocktails on!) and embarked upon our adventure.

Ay carumba.  It was jolly chilly.

Even fully bundled up, I think i probably lost all sensation in my legs after about 30mins, all feeling in my fingers 15 mins later and finally couldn't tell if my face was still attached after about an hour.  But, with(very) stiff (icy) upper lip in place, we still had a fun time!  The route was pretty much as you'd expect - just sailing out into the bay, round Alcatraz for a bit, then the Golden Gate bridge, before turning round and coming back in.  It was good to sit and chat and catch up for a couple of hours, so neither of us were really paying all that much attention to the scenery.  But, our little frozen digits did manage to capture a few pictures, so enjoy from the warmth and comfort of your non-chilly couches!
At least the cold kept the mimosas at the
